About Kakamega Forest National Reserve
Kakamega Forest National Reserve is Kenya’s only surviving remnant of the once-vast Central African tropical rainforest—a biodiversity hotspot and designated Important Bird Area (IBA), making it a true paradise for birdwatchers. Home to hundreds of bird species, rare De Brazza’s monkeys, primates, butterflies, snakes, towering indigenous trees, and natural glades, the forest offers rich wildlife encounters set against scenic, breathtaking landscapes.
Its tranquil nature trails invite immersive adventure and wellness safaris, from gentle forest walks beneath high canopies to refreshing hikes alongside bubbling streams. The silence—punctuated by bird calls and playful monkey chatter—creates a cool, crisp sanctuary ideal for mindful retreats and outdoor rejuvenation.
With its dramatic light filtering through ancient trees and vibrant forest life, Kakamega Forest also provides exceptional opportunities for visual storytelling and filmmaking, while open glades and trail systems support sports, events, and outdoor experiences.

Gazetted as a Trust Forest in 1933, Kakamega Forest was formally protected as one of Kenya’s most important forest ecosystems. In 1985, the northern section covering approximately 4,468 hectares was further gazetted as Kakamega National Reserve to strengthen conservation efforts.
Kakamega Forest is Kenya’s only tropical rainforest and the last remaining fragment of the ancient Guineo-Congolian rainforest that once extended across Central and West Africa. Although the wider ecosystem spans about 238 square kilometres, less than half remains as intact indigenous forest today, highlighting its critical conservation significance.
