About Sibiloi National Park

Set on the wild and rugged shores of Lake Turkana in northern Kenya, Sibiloi National Park is a remote wilderness gem that invites discovery through adventure and outdoor exploration.

Known as the Cradle of Mankind, the park is surrounded by the Dassanach, Turkana, Elmolo, and Gabra communities—custodians of rich and largely unpolluted traditional cultures that add living heritage to the landscape. Anchored by globally significant archaeological sites such as Koobi Fora, where fossil discoveries have transformed understanding of human evolution, Sibiloi offers a powerful blend of natural wonder and cultural depth. Visitors can encounter remarkable prehistoric remains, including fossils of a three-million-year-old giant tortoise, ancient crocodile species, and other primeval creatures dating back millions of years—adding depth and intrigue to every safari.

By day, Sibiloi’s dramatic desert-meets-lake landscapes provide restorative adventure and wellness safaris through open plains and shoreline vistas. By night, the park’s vast skies create exceptional conditions for astro-tourism and guided night wildlife safaris, revealing constellations above and nocturnal life below in one of Kenya’s most untouched environments.

Sibiloi is also a biodiversity stronghold, hosting the world’s largest breeding colonies of Nile crocodiles, 47 fish species (seven endemic), and an Important Bird Area (IBA) supporting thousands of migratory and congregatory birds.

Sibiloi National Park blends ancient heritage, dramatic landscapes, star-filled skies, and immersive wilderness experiences—offering visitors a rare journey through time, nature, and adventure in Kenya’s northern frontier.

Discover the park's history, from its beginnings to ongoing conservation efforts and the communities and wildlife that continue to shape its story.

Gazetted in 1973, Sibiloi National Park was established to protect the globally significant paleontological and archaeological sites discovered in the Lake Turkana region, as well as its unique desert-adapted wildlife. The park gained international recognition in 1997 when it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Lake Turkana National Parks.

Its creation was largely inspired by major fossil discoveries by Dr. Richard Leakey and his team, which greatly advanced understanding of human evolution. Today, Sibiloi remains vital for conserving endangered desert species such as Grevy’s zebra and the Somali ostrich, while also serving as an important centre for scientific research, education, and heritage conservation.

Plan your journey with ease. Find directions, transport options, and helpful tips to make your arrival smooth and stress-free.

By Road: The park is a three day 800km drive from Nairobi via Marsabit and North Horr, or Maralal and South Horr. Alternatively, travel by road from Nairobi to Kalokol on Lake Turkana’s western shores via Kitale and Lodwar. From Kalokol boat hire services are available across the lake to Alia Bay.

The roads connecting the park with the major town have both tarmac and murrum sections. High clearance 4WD vehicles are essential all year round and travelling in convoy is recommended.

By Air: There are 2 all-weather airstrips in the park.  Other airstrips are found in Marsabit, Loiyangalani, Kalokol, North Horr and Lodwar. Commercial flights however only operate on the Lodwar airstrip.
