Mombasa Marine National Park & Reserve was officially gazetted in 1986 under the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act to conserve the area’s rich coral reef systems and associated marine biodiversity. The protected area was established to safeguard marine ecosystems from over-exploitation, habitat degradation, and unsustainable use.

The protected area comprises two management zones:

  • Marine Park (approximately 10 km²): A fully protected core zone where all extractive activities are prohibited.
  • Marine Reserve (approximately 200 km²): A multiple-use buffer zone where regulated fishing and other controlled activities are permitted in line with conservation objectives.
