About Mt. Longonot National Park
Derived from the Maasai word Oloonong’ot, meaning “mountains of many spurs and ridges,” Mount Longonot National Park is sculpted into V-shaped valleys and rugged ridges, creating a powerful natural arena for adventure and outdoor wellness experiences.
The park invites visitors to fully immerse themselves in nature through guided hikes and rim walks; a challenging yet rewarding hike that culminates in sweeping crater views and deep forest interiors. The crater itself hosts a dense, secluded forest, while the surrounding landscapes provide cinematic backdrops ideal for visual storytelling and filmmaking.
Mount Longonot is also a prime destination for sports, events, and outdoor experiences; from endurance hikes and trail challenges to fitness activities and scenic group adventures.
Its raw terrain and panoramic vistas offer a unique setting where physical adventure meets mindful connection with the great outdoors.

Gazetted as a national park in 1983, Mount Longonot National Park was established to protect its dramatic volcanic landscape and unique ecological features. The park safeguards a relatively young stratovolcano that last erupted in 1863. Its name is derived from the Maasai word Oloong’onot, meaning “mountain of spurs” or “mountain of steep ridges,” reflecting its rugged terrain and sharply incised slopes. Covering approximately 52 square kilometres, the park has since become one of Kenya’s most popular destinations for hiking and adventure tourism.
By Road: The park is accessible from Nairobi 90 km on the Nairobi – Nakuru highway.
