About Mwea National Reserve
Mwea National Reserve is a tranquil wilderness oasis set within a vibrant wild landscape, offering a peaceful yet rewarding setting for wildlife safaris and outdoor exploration.
The reserve’s ecosystem is shaped by the confluence of the Tana and Thiba Rivers, alongside the Kamburu and Masinga hydroelectric dams, creating rich habitats that support diverse wildlife and birdlife. This unique riverine landscape provides excellent opportunities for game viewing, guided nature walks, and outdoor experiences ideal for group activities.
A true birdwatchers’ paradise, Mwea is renowned for its impressive populations of water birds and waders. It also shelters rare species such as Pel’s Fishing Owl, the White-backed Night Heron, and the globally threatened, Kenya-endemic Hinde’s Babbler—making it a must-visit destination for avid bird enthusiasts and conservation-minded travelers.
