About Ndere Island National Park
Rising gently from the waters of Lake Victoria, Ndere Island National Park offers a unique outdoor escape defined by rolling hills, shallow valleys, and unrivaled scenic views across its distinctive island landscape. Known locally as Chula Rabour—meaning “Red Island”—Ndere is carpeted with Themeda grass whose mature blooms turn a striking reddish hue, creating a dramatic natural setting ideal for outdoor adventures and group experiences.
Ndere—meaning “meeting place” in Dholuo—provides a tranquil yet engaging environment for hiking, nature walks, picnics, and organized outdoor activities. The park was originally established as a refuge for impalas and today also supports zebras, hippopotamuses, Nile crocodiles, African fish eagles, and swifts, adding rich wildlife encounters to every visit.
With its open landscapes and lakeside setting, Ndere Island National Park is well-suited for sports-based outings and team activities, offering visitors a refreshing blend of recreation, scenic beauty, and wildlife exploration in one of Kenya’s most distinctive island parks.

Gazetted as a National Park in November 1986 through Legal Notice No. 368 of 3rd November 1986, Ndere Island National Park was established to protect its ecological value within the Lake Victoria ecosystem. Covering 4.2 km² in the Winam Gulf, the park safeguards a tranquil island landscape that has since experienced significant natural regeneration following conservation protection.
Before gazettement, the island was traditionally used by the local Luo community for subsistence farming and collection of building materials under customary resource management practices. The name “Ndere,” meaning “meeting place,” reflects its cultural importance, with oral traditions linking the area to early Nilotic migrants who settled along its fertile and sheltered shores.
